Preparations in Brazil for COP30

In the second half of 2025, Brazil is intensifying its preparations for COP30, with a strong national focus on climate action, energy transition, and science-driven innovation. As part of this momentum, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) is developing the Brazilian National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (ENCTI) 2025–2035. This forward-looking policy aims to transform Brazil into a global innovation leader by investing 2.5% of GDP in R&D by 2035. Anchored in four strategic pillars — system renovation, green reindustrialization, strategic technologies, and inclusive development — the strategy promotes innovation in sectors like health, energy, bioeconomy, and microelectronics. It also values traditional knowledge, social technologies, and international cooperation, positioning Brazil as a key partner in global scientific collaboration. Built through a participatory process involving over 100,000 contributors, ENCTI will be implemented starting in 2026.

AI and Swedish-Brazilian cooperation

Professor Fredrik Heintz, a leading European expert in trustworthy AI from Linköping University and the professor chair of the AI partnership with Brazil, visited the Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (CEIA) at the Federal University of Goias (UFG) , alongside Ambassador Karin Wallensteen and Ana Carolina Bussacos, Senior Advisor at OSI Brasília. The visit aimed to deepen Sweden-Brazil cooperation in artificial intelligence, applied science, and innovation. CEIA, Latin America's largest AI hub, impressed with its robust academicprograms, strategic investments, and cutting-edge infrastructure. UFG’s pioneering AI undergraduate program and its R$ 90 million commitments to open innovation were key highlights. CEIA’s role as an Embrapii unit and its bilateral project with Vinnova in bioeconomy showcased already existing ties. OSI Brasília played a central role in facilitating this exchange, reinforcing its mission to connect global innovation ecosystems. The visit strengthened bridges between Swedish and Brazilian institutions, promoting responsible and inclusive AI.

OSI at Recife with the EU delegation

During the science, technology and Innovation EU mission to Pernambuco, OSI Brasília represented Sweden in exploring one of Brazil’s most vibrant innovation ecosystems. From Porto Digital’s creative economy to SENAI’s green hydrogen tech, and Thempest's  cybersecurity leadership, the visit revealed powerful opportunities for bilateral cooperation. The Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) stood out with world-class centers like the Center of Informatics (Cin), the Keizo Asami Immunopathology Laboratory (LIKA), Laboratory for Technological Innovation in Energy and Gas (iLIPTEG), and the Center for Renewable Energy (CER)—advancing AI, health, and sustainability with global partners, including Sweden. Curious how Recife became a global hotspot for tech diplomacy?
